In Reception, children are taught systematic phonics in phases. Each phase introduces new grapheme-phoneme correspondences (letter-sound relationships), and children practise reading and spelling words that use only the sounds they've been taught so far. This page covers the decodable words typically associated with Phases 1 to 5.

Unlike the Year 1 and Year 2 common exception word lists, Reception phonics words are regular — they follow phonics rules. The point is not to memorise them but to practise applying the decoding skills that have been taught. If a child can decode the word, they can also spell it.

How Reception phonics phases work

  • Phase 1: listening skills, environmental sounds, rhythm and rhyme. Children aren't yet reading printed words — they're building phonological awareness.
  • Phase 2: first graphemes introduced (s, a, t, p, i, n, m, d). Children start reading and spelling simple CVC words: sat, pin, man.
  • Phase 3: more graphemes, including digraphs (ch, sh, th, ng) and longer vowel sounds. Words become more varied: chip, rain, night.
  • Phase 4: no new graphemes — children consolidate Phase 2 and 3 sounds in CCVC and CVCC words: flat, frog, clap.
  • Phase 5: alternative graphemes for familiar sounds (e.g. 'ai' also written as 'a-e', 'ay'). Children start to understand that the same sound can be spelled different ways.

How teachers use Reception phonics words

  • Phonics lessons: decodable words are introduced within each lesson, used in reading and writing activities that directly apply the new grapheme.
  • Word reading practice: children read word cards, sort words by sound pattern, and build words with letter tiles — all to reinforce grapheme-phoneme correspondence.
  • Spelling from dictation: from Phase 2 onwards, teachers regularly dictate simple words for children to write from sound — this is the foundation of spelling development.
  • Home reading books: decodable books are carefully matched to the child's current phonics phase so they can apply what they know without encountering sounds they haven't been taught yet.

Tips for practising phonics at home

  • Follow the school's scheme. Reception phonics practice works best when it's consistent with what's being taught at school. Ask your child's teacher what phase they're on and which sounds they've covered.
  • Say the sounds, then the word. For spelling practice, say the word clearly, have the child repeat it, then ask them to write each sound in order: "What sound do you hear first? What letter makes that sound?"
  • Keep it short and playful. Five minutes of word reading or spelling, daily, is more effective than longer infrequent sessions. Make it a game — race against the clock, earn stickers.
  • SpellCast's Reception mode adapts to your child's current phase and only introduces new sounds once earlier ones are secure — the same progression-based approach as classroom phonics teaching.

Frequently asked questions

Is this the official Reception word list?
There isn't a single statutory Reception word list equivalent to the Year 1/2 common exception words list. These are the decodable words associated with Phases 1–5 of systematic phonics, which align with Letters and Sounds and most popular phonics programmes (Phonics Bug, Biff Chip and Kipper, Read Write Inc.). They represent the typical range of words a Reception child would encounter across the phases.
What's the difference between phonics words and common exception words?
Phonics words follow the rules — they can be decoded using the grapheme-phoneme correspondences that have been taught. Common exception words break the rules and must be learned by sight. Reception children are taught both: phonics words to practise decoding, and a small set of common exception words (like "the", "I", "is") to recognise on sight.
My child is in Reception — which phase are they on?
Ask the class teacher. Most schools use a phased phonics programme and your child's teacher will be able to tell you exactly which sounds have been introduced. Many schools also send home phased reading books that tell you the phase on the back cover.
Can I use this list for free?
Yes. These words are drawn from publicly available phonics phase word lists. SpellCast uses the same lists to power its Reception-mode adaptive spelling practice — free for families for 6 weeks.
